Upgrading Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) to 9.10 (Karmic) on Eee PC Seashell

karmicAfter having Ubuntu 9.04 on my Eee PC for less than 24 hours, I decided to take the plunge and update it to the latest alpha release of Ubuntu 9.10 codename Karmic Koala. I was pleasantly surprised that the Seashell appears to be snappier with this new alpha release. It has the new Linux Kernel v2.6.30-6 and appears to support the wireless card on the new Seashell 1008HA. This is fantastic! I was worried that my wireless woud be broken as I saw it removed the linux-backports-modules-jaunty that I had previously installed to get the wireless working. If you want to try it out yourself after following my installation for Jaunty on the Eee PC, these were the steps I took to upgrade my kernel:

Make sure the APT repository is updated:

sudo apt-get update

Make sure Update Manager is installed and up to date (which it should be):

sudo apt-get install update-manager

Now run the Update Manager from Terminal:

sudo update-manager -d

You will see an option “New distribution release ‘9.10′ is available”. Click the Upgrade button to upgrade and follow the prompts to upgrade your distribution.

Here’s a link with more info on the alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha1

Good luck!

  1. Hi my friend, Im about to buy the Eee 1008HA and just wanted to know, beside the ethernet, what other problem u had after installing ubuntu?? did the sound works? mic? camera? compiz run smooth??? thanks for ur advice

    • See my reply to the previous poster for the function keys. As for camera, it works fine. I have not tested the mic yet as I don’t really use Skype or anything that records sound, but I will let you know once I do use it. Sound works fine on it, however, through the speakers, I do notice it’s lower than normal. Could be the sound driver that Ubuntu uses. Through the headphones it’s fine.

Compiz runs smoothly and snappy on it. I haven’t had any problems.

      Cheers!

  2. Nifty and needed. I was about to go the long way, downloading a live image and then wrestling to make my USB stick bootable. (GRUB and making it bootable sector totally confuse me!) So thanks for showing me how to make apt-get do the driving.

I ran Jaunty remix with okay results for a couple months on my Eee PC 900. I had the same overheating problems many had, until I installed powernowd. That helped. The only other Jaunty problem I ever had was a bug on the homescreen that made the mouse move sluggishly only on home screen.

Did you notice that Karmic Ubuntu includes, instead of none, TWO full fledged SQL servers? Kind of crazy. PostgreSQL and MySQL.

    • No I didn’t notice, but can you just not install PostgresSQL and MySQL through the Ubuntu Repository with apt-get install?

  3. Thank you for you post. I have one doubt, I know you don’t use, but could please inform if th ethernet works with thsi Ubuntu release?
Also on you post of the 9.04 you put a screenshot of ours descktop, could you make a new post on how you change it.

    Thanks from Brazil

  4. Hi, i updated from 9.04 to 9.10 and found 4 first problems:

    1. sound did not work, this was solved after another (2nd) restart
    2. video, the webcam shows a very dark picture, but it is working
    3. mousepad tap and scroll does not work, only the mouse movement
    4. eee-control-tray 0.9.2 does not show options at “performance”, only “none”
camera, cardreader, wireless and bluetooth are working out of the box
aha, pulse audio crashed just now

  5. Hello, just found your website as I want to upgrade to 9.10 Beta from 9.04. I have an Eee 1000H and dualboot it with XP. I want to know if there are any known issues or bugs with the new GRUB (2) menu, or is it correct, that it wont (GRUB) upgrade? Do you personally dualboot? If there should be any problems, how do I get to Windows? Should I backup any special file (e.g. menu.lst)? Thank you for your answer in advance! Thx from Slovakia
